    Acclaimed jazz guitarists Rale Micic and Mike Moreno bring their formidable quartet to Zinc jazz club on Monday, July 11. They're supported by Peter Slavov on bass and Jason Tiemann on drums.

    Rale Micic is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed jazz musicians to emerge from Serbia. Audiences throughout the world have been captivated by Micic’s mesmerizing music, exploring the interaction between his Serbian musical roots and his extensive knowledge of jazz. Micic has worked with jazz artists such as Tom Harrell, Don Friedman, Eric Alexander, Jason, Delfeayo Marsalis, etc. He is a member of Tom Harrell Chamber Ensemble and is featured on the critically acclaimed release First Impression (2015 High Note). Rale Micic plays Sadowsky Guitars and D’Addario strings.

    Originally from Houston, Texas, Mike Moreno began studying music formally at the Houston High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a school renowned for its musical alumni, which includes such luminaries as Jason Moran, Robert Glasper, Bryan Michael Cox, Eric Harland, Chris Dave, Kendrick Scott, and Beyoncé. After graduating, Mike moved to New York City with a scholarship to attend the New School University. While still in school he began garnering the recognition necessary to be called to perform and tour with some of the most venerable names in the Jazz world as well as rising stars of the scene. Over the years, they have included The Joshua Redman Elastic Band, Lizz Wright Band, Nicholas Payton Quartet, Stefon Harris Sonic Creed, Me'Shell N'Degeocello, Jason Moran, Terence Blanchard, Robert Glasper, Ambrose Akinmusire, Gretchen Parlato, Aaron Parks, Claudia Acuña, Greg Osby 4, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Jeremy Pelt, John Ellis, Myron Walden, Kenny Garret, Yosvany Terry, Ralph Bowen, Will Vinson and more.

  • The Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture presents ¡El Inolvidable! Tito Rodriguez, a three-day retrospective of the iconic singer’s life, song and lasting influence from November 11 to 13 on the campus of Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse (at 149th Street), in the Bronx. With his elegant voice, graceful manner and impeccable style, Tito Rodríguez (1923-1973) rose to the top of Latin music leaving behind a legacy of boleros, Afro-Cuban standards, instrumentals and mambo. His impact is incalculable – influencing salsa greats from Cheo Feliciano, Ismael Miranda to Gilberto Santa Rosa.

    Under the artistic direction of the singer’s son, Tito Rodríguez, Jr., as well as consultant and Latin music historian Joe Conzo, Sr., the festival is designed for both Tito Rodríguez enthusiasts and those less familiar with his music. The weekend includes film screenings, never-before-heard recordings, a family concert, a panel discussion – and to top it all off – 2 main concerts with the Tito Rodríguez Orchestra led by son Tito Rodríguez, Jr. with multi-Grammy Award winner Gilberto Santa Rosa – known to his fans as El Caballero de la Salsa (Salsa’s Gentleman). The main concerts take place on Saturday, November 12 at 8:00 PM and on Sunday, November 13 at 4:00 PM in the Main Theater. Together - live and on the stage at Hostos - they will perform 24 of the beloved singer’s legendary songs - from his mambos and cha-cha-chas to his romantic boleros and smokey torch songs. John “Dandy” Rodríguez, Jr. will take to the stage in a free family concert on Saturday, November 12 at 12:30 PM with an informative performance demonstrating the different styles of Latin music, such as the mambo, cha-cha-cha and bolero. Throughout the concert, the bandleader will perform some of Tito Rodríguez’ music and speak about the singer’s enduring legacy and importance. This family concert is appropriate for ages 4 and up.

    Acclaimed jazz pianist Manuel Valera brings his formidable trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Tuesday, September 6. He’s supported by Hamish Smith on bass and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums.

    Based in New York City, Grammy-nominated artist, pianist, and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in NYC, he has become well known in the NYC modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artists as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, Jeff “Tain” Watts, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Joel Frahm, Yosvany Terry among many others.

    Valera is also the leader of his working band Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, a project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s. While inspired by artists Irakere, Emiliano Salvador, and AfroCuba, this touring band creates a unique and distinctive style that mixes elements of Jazz, R&B, fusion, and funk with Cuban music styles. Expectativas (MAVO 2013) is the follow-up and seventh recording as a leader to his 2013 Grammy-nominated New Cuban Express (MAVO 2012) which was up for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year.

    His critically acclaimed debut cd in 2004 Forma Nueva (MAVO) features John Patitucci, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez Bill Stewart, and Seamus Blake. Historia (Fresh Sounds New Talent 2005), a jazz quartet with Antonio Sanchez, Seamus Blake, and Ben Street. His third release, Melancolia (MAVO 2006)—employs a string quartet incorporating world rhythms and classical concepts in the jazz idiom. Vientos (Anzic 2007), representing a new working quartet, features bassist James Genus, drummer Ernesto Simpson, saxophonist Joel Frahm, and a woodwind quartet. His fifth trio recording Currents (MaxJazz 2009) features Ernesto Simpson and James Genus.

    In addition, he has been awarded several grants for composition, most notably Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works and the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. Manuel has traveled the world performing in over 30 countries at some of the biggest international venues and festivals.

  • Co-choreographed by Ethan Stiefel and Johan Kobborg, Giselle makes its American Repertory Ballet premiere at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center in March 2023. This celebrated and moving production had its world premiere at the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 2012, and has since toured the globe.

    The tragic tale unfolds against the ghostly backdrop of a Rhineland forest haunted by the fearful presence of the “Wilis” – vengeful spirits of abandoned brides. The beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, falls for Albrecht who conceals his identity to win her. The discovery of her lover’s deception shatters Giselle’s innocence and causes her to die of a broken heart. Albrecht is thrown into the hands of the merciless Wilis, but Giselle cannot bear to watch him die and returns as a ghost to save him.

    One of the most romantic story ballets of all time, Giselle illustrates the strength of love, the devastation of betrayal, and the power of forgiveness.
