The Checkout Live at Berklee presented some of jazz’s finest modern masters in concert. They all happen to be women.
Drummer Terri Lynne Carrington, pianist Kris Davis, bassist Linda May Han Oh, flutist Elena Pindherhughes, flugelhornist Milena Casado Fauquet, saxophonist Tia Fuller and vocalist Nadia Washington joined students from The Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice band in a not-to-be-missed concert.
The performance, titled New Standards, will feature original compositions by some of the performers in this all-star band, plus songs by jazz luminaries Mary Lou Williams, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Esperanza Spalding and others. In addition to the concert, the band plans to release a “new standard” e-book, which will include significant female composers often overlooked in the jazz pantheon.
“I noticed that when we play standards, old or new, most often there are no women represented as music composers,” Carrington says in a preview feature for Berklee Now. “I feel this book will address that, offering a large curated group of songs for students, professionals, and educators to access and add to their repertoire.”
She adds: “This highlights our philosophy that the music will only live up to its full potential when gender equity is a guiding principle.”
