Hear Highlights From Our Labor Day Broadcast of the 2017 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

This Labor Day, WBGO presented four hours of music, recorded live at this year’s Charlie Parker Jazz Festival. We have highlights from the broadcast right here.

The playlist above begins at Tompkins Square Park, where classically trained vocalist Alicia Olatuja led a group featuring guitarist David Rosenthal, bassist Ben Williams, pianist Toru Dodo, drummer Jonathan Barber and singers Rasul A-Salaam and Shadrack Pierce.

Next up is clarinetist Anat Cohen with her Tentet, drawing from a new album, Happy Song. The band includes Owen Broder on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet; Nick Finzer on trombone; Vitor Gonçlaves on piano and accordion; Christopher Hoffman on cello; Stuart Mack on trumpet; Joe Martin on bass; Idan Morim on guitar; Anthony Pinicotti on drums and James Shipp on vibraphone and percussion.

Then comes saxophonist Tia Fuller, who had just returned from a concert tour around the world. She took the stage at Tompkins Square Park with pianist Shamie Royston, bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn.

Finally we’ll go to drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, who has worked with artists including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Carlos Santana. Her new project Social Science, which performed at Marcus Garvey Park, includes pianist Aaron Parks, guitarist Matt Stevens, bassist and saxophonist Morgan Guerin, DJ and rapper Kassa Overall, and singer Deh-Bow.
