Remembering Bassist Gary Peacock, with a Recent Conversation on The Checkout

Jimmy Katz
Gary Peacock

Gary Peacock, who died on Sept. 4 at 85, was a bassist who truly lived in the moment. That was the case every time he picked up his instrument, and no less true of an engaging interview with The Checkout in 2014, at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

At the time, Peacock was on tour promoting his ECM trio recording Now This, with pianist Marc Copland and drummer Joey Baron. So our conversation didn’t address his three-decade tenure in the Keith Jarrett Trio — a calculated choice given our limited time together. However, the double bassist did share his philosophy of always being in the present onstage, in addition to reflecting on the time he shared with both Lester Young and Albert Ayler.
