WBGO continues to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month by showcasing the talents of the next generation of jazz musicians. Students studying music at William Paterson University paid a recent visit to WBGO to do a live recording session of four jazz standards.

The William Paterson University Jazz Studies Program was founded in 1973 and was the first in the New York City area. Offering undergrad and graduate degrees, the program has been led by Thad Jones, Rufus Reid, James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, and today is directed by Bill Charlap and coordinated by David Demsey. The artist/teacher faculty is made up of world class New York area professionals; jazz majors come to William Paterson this year from 19 states and 11 foreign countries, with several recent international Fulbright Scholars. The William Paterson campus is home to the Living Jazz Archives, containing the archives of Clark Terry, Thad Jones, Michael Brecker, Art Farmer, Lee Konitz, James Williams, Harold Mabern, Mulgrew Miller, and Don Sebesky. The Jazz Room concert series celebrates its 45th season this year, and the 31st annual weeklong Summer Jazz Workshop for high school students occurs next July.

The attending ensemble, under the guidance of renowned pianist Bill Charlap, consisted of the following musicians:

Leonieke Scheuble: piano (Senior, Rockaway, NJ)
Jackson Bernstein: drums (Sophomore, Brooklyn, NY)
Sam Aubuchon: bass (Junior, St. Louis, MO)
Avery Pambianchi: trumpet (1st-year Masters, Corning, NY)
Bailey Giles: tenor sax (2nd year Masters, Hampden, ME)
