  • “A searing unison interplay between Theo Bleckmann and Ben Monder – either they rehearsed this passage for months or they have developed a familial telepathy from their years of collaboration.” —All About Jazz

Acclaimed jazz guitarist Ben Monder joins forces with vocalist Theo Bleckmann to perform at Zinc on Monday, January 16.

A musician in the New York City area for over 30 years, Ben Monder has performed with a wide variety of artists, including Jack McDuff, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Billy Childs, Andrew Cyrille, George Garzone, Paul Motian, Maria Schneider, and Marshall Crenshaw. He also contributed guitar parts to the last David Bowie album, “Blackstar”. Ben conducts clinics and workshops around the world, and has served on the faculties of the New England Conservatory, NYU, and the New School. He was the recipient of a Doris Duke Impact Award in 2014, and a Shifting Foundation grant in 2013. Ben continues to perform original music internationally in solo and trio settings, and in a long-standing duo project with vocalist Theo Bleckmann. He has appeared on over 200 CDs as a sideman, and has released 6 as a leader: Amorphae (ECM, 2015), Hydra (Sunnyside, 2013), Oceana (Sunnyside, 2005), Excavation (Arabesque, 2000), Dust(Arabesque, 1997), and Flux(Songlines,1995).

GRAMMY® nominated jazz singer and new music composer Theo Bleckmann’s diverse recorded work includes albums of Las Vegas standards, Weimar art songs, and popular “bar songs” (all with pianist Fumio Yasuda); a recording of newly-arranged songs by Charles Ives (with jazz/rock collective Kneebody); and his acclaimed “Hello Earth – the Music of Kate Bush.” Bleckmann has most recently appeared as a special guest on recordings by Ambrose Akinmusire for Blue Note Records and Julia Hülsmann’s trio for ECM Records. In January 2017, ECM will release Bleckmann’s recording with his new Elegy Quintet, produced by legendary label head and founder, Manfred Eicher. Bleckmann has collaborated with musicians, artists, actors, and composers, including Ambrose Akinmusire, Laurie Anderson, Uri Caine, Philip Glass, Ann Hamilton, John Hollenbeck, Sheila Jordan, Phil Kline, David Lang, Kirk Nurock, Frances McDormand, Ben Monder, Michael Tilson Thomas, Kenny Wheeler, John Zorn, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and, most prominently, Meredith Monk, with whom Bleckmann worked as a core ensemble member for over fifteen years.
He has been interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air and appeared on the David Letterman show with Laurie Anderson. In 2015, Bleckmann premiered a new work for the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, and in 2016 he brings new work to the New York Philharmonic Biennial and the LA Philharmonic. Bleckmann has consistently appeared in the top-five spots in the DownBeat Critics’ Polls for Best Male Vocalist, and top-ten spots in their Readers’ Polls, and his work on Phil Kline’s “Out Cold” helped place that production on WQXR’s Operavore “Best Opera of 2012”. In 2010, Bleckmann received the prestigious JAZZ ECHO award from the Deutsche Phono-Akademie in his native Germany.

Showtimes are at 7:00 PM and 8:30 pm. Tickets: $25 advance / $30 day of show. For more info, visit http://zincjazzcom.
  • Catch this intimate journey through the world of songs long-forgotten - but newly created - with both soulfulness and swing that's accessible, memorable and bound to put you in the holiday spirit. After the release of last season's Holiday single, As Is returns to Chelsea Table & Stage to put you back into the spirit.

Described as "nothing short of enchanting" (All About Jazz), the musical union of jazz guitarist, Alan Schulman and jazz vocal stylist, Stacey Lynn Schulman is the heart of As Is. The couple - both on and off stage - have made a name for themselves for their imaginative re-expressions of 20th century song classics.

As Is takes audiences on an intimate journey through the world and words of songs long-forgotten - but newly created - with both the soulfulness and swing that's accessible, memorable and highly musical. As Is has toured extensively in the US, Europe and Asia performing live and in the studio with contemporary jazz talents including Marcus Baylor, David Binney, Christie Dashiell, Corcoran Holt, Kokayi, and Gregoire Maret.

Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, jazz guitarist Alan Schulman studied with the late great guitarist Cal Collins (formerly of the Benny Goodman Orchestra). Known for his versatile chops from the warmth of his “soft, round tone” (All About Jazz) to his ability to “pick out clever melodies and musical frames” (Jazz Weekly), Schulman became a mainstay of the Chicago jazz scene with jazz educator, David Bloom, before earning his Masters degree in Jazz Arranging & Composition from Howard University in Washington, DC.

A Thelonius Monk Competition Top-10 finalist, he has appeared with such noted jazz artists as Anita Baker, Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis & Michael Feinstein.

Stacey Schulman is a native of the New York City area, where her dynamic, stylistic vocal range has been featured on radio commercials, TV series and movie soundtracks since the age of nine. Schulman regularly “summons delicate lace on one song and a bouncy jam on another” (All About Jazz), but her calling cards are ballads where both the strength and expressiveness of her art shine (Jazz Artistry Now). Together, “the musical chemistry between Stacey and Alan Schulman is energetic and contagious” (The Jazz Page).

The As Is discography began in Rome, where the couple recorded an intimate debut album of standards, A Love Like Ours (2015). Their sophomore release, Here’s to Life (2018) with Grammy-nominated producer, James McKinney, established the duo as compelling storytellers and arrangers, offering listeners new soundscapes that could swing hard while leaning into Latin, classical, vocalese and Indian sonic accents. Recorded at Eusonia Studios, NYC, and mastered by Emily Lazar at The Lodge, NYC (assisted by Chris Allgood), the album debuted at #1 on Amazon Jazz, #6 on iTunes Jazz and #9 on Billboard's Traditional Jazz Chart. It was well-reviewed and embraced by jazz radio in 2018.

In December 2021, As Is released a new twist on a holiday classic with a joyful, samba-inspired, O Holy Night. The couple re-mastered their debut album, A Love Like Ours, honoring the 10 year anniversary of its recording with a new bonus track release, Both Sides Now, this winter. Their 3rd full-length album, an exploration of “life as we feel it,” is expected in late 2022.

About the JAZZ HOUSE Organ Ambassadors:
This advanced student ensemble plays the music of the Organ Jazz Scene, a subgenre of jazz. This music was prevalent in African-American venues from the 1950s-1980s and still has a place on today’s jazz scene. In class, students spend time exploring the connection of the blues to modern jazz through patterns and seeing harmonic implications. This group features a bass player instead of an organist playing bass parts to emphasize the unique groove that organ jazz has.
