Los Angeles Soul Artist Joey Dosik Shares His 'Inside Voice,' and Jazz Tales, on The Checkout

Joey Dosik

Multi-instrumentalist Joey Dosik, a 33-year old singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, crafts original soul music that draws from the pantheon: Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder. On this edition of The Checkout, we'll get inside some of his sports-themed songs and walk through his autobiographical, L.A.-centered jazz playlist.

I first heard Dosik in 2012, through his affiliation with the funk band Vulfpeck, and I was immediately was sold. His latest record, Inside Voice, was released last year on the Secretly Canadian label, and coupled with a well-received international tour. The album includes appearances by members of Vulfpeck as well as singer Moses Sumney and Flying Lotus collaborator Miguel-Atwood Ferguson.

Not only does Dosik work tirelessly to sculpt analog recordings rooted in traditional R&B, he has a background in jazz saxophone. We'll get to know his musical inspirations and hear tales of his high school jazz days playing at The World Stage in Inglewood with legendary bassist Henry Grimes.
