From The Archives: Remembering Bass Icon Charlie Haden, on The Checkout

Jim Mcguire
Charlie Haden

Charlie Haden left us five years ago, but his influence and musical contributions are still being felt today.

Last year, Impulse! Records posthumously released a tranquil recording featuring the double bassist in an intimate duo setting with the pianist Brad Mehldau, titled Long Ago and Far Away. They performed together in 2007 at the Enjoy Jazz Festival in Germany.

On this edition of The Checkout, we hear a little of that music, but more importantly, pull out a true gem from our archives, a heartfelt and candid conversation with Haden conducted by WBGO’s Rhonda Hamilton. They cover a lot of ground in Haden's seven-decade career, including his playing with many of jazz’s all-time greats, including Ornette Coleman, Pat Metheny, Paul Bley, and Carla Bley.

And Haden gives a heart-melting sing-along that takes the bassist back to his youth, growing up in America’s heartland.
