Dig the Funkier Side of Grant Green: Newly Discovered Recordings, on The Checkout

Jean-Pierre Leloir
Grant Green at the Antibes Jazz Festival, 1970

The guitarist Grant Green may have left us nearly 40 years ago, but his influence is still being felt today — and not only in jazz circles.

On this Record Store Day episode of The Checkout, we talk to Zev Feldman of Resonance Records about the new archival releases Grant Green: Funk In France from Paris to Antibes (1969 - 1970) and Grant Green: Slick! Live at Oil Can Harry’s.

Listen to our podcast to hear these two newly discovered recordings, worthy and surprising additions to Green’s already impressive discography.

These come during an era when the guitarist couldn’t land a record deal, yet was expanding his sound: taking cues from the popular funky sounds of the day, via the Ohio Players, Stanley Clarke, and James Brown. We also hear a rare interview with Green himself, talking about his influences, beginning with Charlie Christian.

Grant Green: Funk In France from Paris to Antibes (1969 - 1970) and Grant Green: Slick! Live at Oil Can Harry’s are available exclusively on vinyl for Record Store Day, on April 21, from Resonance Records. (Both albums will be released in digital formats and on CD on May 25.)
