The music world continues to mourn the loss of Joe Louis Walker, the trailblazing San Francisco blues guitarist, vocalist and musician who died on April 30, 2025 at the age of 75. He was surrounded by family and friends.

Walker has crossed paths with everyone and put his own imprint on the music. In January of this year, WBGO’s Dave Popkin spoke with Joe Louis Walker about his amazing Blues Hall of Fame career.

On this episode of The Art of the Story, Joe Louis Walker talks about opening for Thelonious Monk and playing with B.B. King at various shows.

Walker’s most recent record was The Weight of the World which was released in 2022. A particular highlight on that album is “Is It a Matter of Time?”, which features Walker in full soul/STAX mode and stellar horn playing and arrangement by Mark Pender.
