Steven Sussman

Steven Sussman has been photographing jazz musicians in concert since 2002.  Photography is his passion as his primary career is imaging of the human body in another capacity - as a radiologist.  Photographing artists has become his central means to manifest his deep feelings for their music.  His photographs appear regularly in Downbeat and he has had photographs in Jazz Times, Jazziz, The NY Jazz Record, Jazz Inside, the Hartford Courant, the NY times and Vogue magazine. Jazz critic, Owen McNally, has said of Sussman’s work “With their evocative use of substance and shadow, the seen and the implied, his images are lyrical, luminous impressions of deeply felt, fleeting moments. All his tone poems are spontaneously composed in the pure jazz spirit of a Bill Evans, Miles or Trane. The only difference is that Sussman's instrument is a camera instead of a piano, trumpet or saxophone.” For the past 25 years, Sussman has produced a yearly benefit called Jazz for Juvenile Diabetes, for which he brings his favorite musicians to the Hartford area. Since 1995 this endeavor has raised nearly  $500,000 for the JDRF, the largest organization funding research to cure diabetes.  See his photos at www.sussmanphotography.com.
