Louis Hayes Artform Revisited

NEA Jazz Master Louis Hayes packed up his drum set in Detroit and moved east to New York City in 1956 to join the Horace Silver Quintet. In 1959 he would join Cannonball Adderley's band, and never look back, recording with John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins and many more giants of modern jazz.

Now, at the youthful age of 87, Hayes continues to be a sparkler in this music. His new recording, Artform Revisited, is an inspiring look back at reimagined classics from Dizzy Gillespie, John Lewis, Charlie Parker and Billy Strayhorn alongside a couple of originals, all pulled together with the creative assistance of saxophonist Abraham Burton, pianist David Hazeltine, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, and bassist Dezron Douglas.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
