Joe Farnsworth’s ‘In What Direction Are You Headed?’ featured on WBGO’s New Day, New Play July 24-28

Drummer Joe Farnsworth has rhythm-a-nized some of the brightest names in jazz—McCoy Tyner, Harold Mabern, Pharoah Sanders, Benny Golson, Horace Silver and Kenny Barron, and that's the short list. Imagine Joe's requirements when heading in a new direction, with a new band. Alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, Julius Rodriguez on piano and Fender Rhodes and bassist Robert Hurst join the leader for originals, along with engaging inventions on works by Mabern and Donny Hathaway.

From Monday, July 24 through Friday, July 28, one cut from the In What Direction Are You Headed? album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
