The Secret History of the Jersey Devil

When the NHL hockey team known as the Colorado Rockies moved to New Jersey in 1982, the new owners ran a contest to name the team and more than 10,000 votes were cast.

Not all fans of the New Jersey Devils realize that the team was named after a creature that, according to myth, roamed the Pine Barrens in South Jersey.

WBGO’s Jon Kalish takes a look back at the colorful folklore surrounding the Jersey Devil.

Doug Doyle has been News Director at WBGO since 1998. Since then, Doug and his news staff have received more than 300 awards from organizations like PRNDI (now PMJA), AP, New York Association of Black Journalists, Garden State Association of Black Journalists and the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists.
