A new memoir has been published by one of the Canadians who helped free the imprisoned prize fighter Rubin Hurricane Carter

Much of the story about the late boxer Rubin Hurricane Carter takes place in New Jersey, where he grew up and served time for a 1966 triple homicide in Paterson. After his conviction was overturned, Carter was released and went to live in Toronto with members of a Canadian commune who played a pivotal role in the legal battle to free him. Now, one of those members has published a memoir detailing some of the behind-the-scenes drama of the commune’s life with Carter and the Brooklyn teenager who dragged them into the case.

WBGO’s Jon Kalish has covered the saga of Hurricane Carter for 40 years. He has this update.
