This week a new show opened at the Whitney Museum surveying the work of the late Harry Smith. He was best known for an anthology of folk music but Smith was also a painter and filmmaker. WBGO’s Jon Kalish has the first of two stories on Smith’s life and artistic output…

The Harry Smith show runs at the Whitney Museum through the end of January.

Next week Jon Kalish will report on Harry Smith’s connection to the jazz world, which included creating paintings interpreting jazz recordings.
