A story about a man who worked for 30 years at the Post Office but was also a great jazz singer. Willie Dwight West grew up in Newark and hoped to play pro basketball after going to college on an athletic scholarship. His musical life started as a child who went to the Abyssinian Baptist Church where his grandmother played the piano. West passed away in January.
WBGO’s Jon Kalish has this appreciation.
NOTE: Next week we’ll have a profile of West’s son, the poet Rashad Wright, who lives in a unique artist compound in Paterson.
