For 35 years, the tradition of Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y has been a swingin’ shelter from the swelter, while delighting audiences with scorching sounds spread over 7 evenings.
Pianist Bill Charlap, the artistic director of the series, is proud of the temperature level of the program, which this year includes The American Songbook in Jazz, the warm and hot of Brazilian and Cuban styles, a three trumpet salute to Clifford Brown, and “In The Key of Us”, a two piano sextet led by Charlap and Renee Rosnes, another worldly pianist able to push and pull in any musical setting. Bill and Renee came to play on Morning Jazz, chatting and demonstrating the ways two different painters come together so wonderfully in a unified portrait.
A complete schedule of this year’s series beginning July 16th is at their website.
