Acclaimed jazz pianist John di Martino brings his quartet to Zinc to celebrate the music of composer Billy Strayhorn on Tuesday, October 25. He’s supported by tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist Kenny Davis, and drummer Carmen Intorre.

John di Martino has been described by Paul Pines as a musical "shape shifter", inhabiting three different worlds. As a straight-ahead jazz pianist, he has performed and recorded with such notables as Kenny Burrell, Pat Martino, James Moody, and Eddie Gomez. Mr. di Martino is a sought-after musical director and has accompanied Jon Hendricks, Diane Schuur, and the late Billy Eckstine.

Acclaimed jazz pianist Jim Ridl brings his trio to Zinc on Tuesday, November 8. He’s supported by bassist Matthew Parrish and drummer Rudy Royston.

Jim Ridl is in high demand as a New York City jazz pianist, composer, teacher, and bandleader. His ongoing residency at the internationally known jazz club, The 55 Bar, is in its fifth year, where he and his quartet perform his original compositions monthly. Jim performs worldwide with a variety of jazz artists, including The Joe Locke Quartet, The Dave Liebman Big Band, The Paul Jost Quartet, and the Mingus Big Band. He has toured with the US State Department American Music Abroad program (’12 and ’15), performing in Russia, South Korea, China, the Philippines, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Slovenia, and Malta. As a composer and leader, Jim has released 7 recordings, the latest titled Door in a Field, Volume 2. Jim was a Princeton University Visiting Artist for three separate semesters (’12, ’14, ’16), coaching jazz ensembles in repertoire and performance. Jim continues as an adjunct educator in Jazz Piano Studies at The City College of New York and the New York Jazz Workshop in Manhattan. From 1994 to 2004, Jim performed with jazz guitar legend Pat Martino, receiving critically acclaimed reviews of performances around the world, and producing four outstanding recordings: Interchange, Night Wings, The Maker and Nexus. Jim was raised on a farm and ranch in North Dakota and discovered his love for piano and jazz at an early age. He attended the University of Colorado at Denver, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Scoring and Arranging, and was awarded its Student Achievement Award for composing “Ocean Sojourn,” an orchestral tone poem, performed with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, James Setapen conducting.

Born in Israel, Oz started his professional career at the age of 13 playing jazz, blues, pop, and rock music. By age 16, he was playing with top Israeli musicians and artists. By age 24, he was one of the most established studio guitar players in the country. Oz was also a member of the house band on Israel’s top-rated television show for more than two years.

Since his 1996 arrival in New York, Oz has made a huge impact on the local and international music scene. His unique and intoxicating style has broken all the rules of instrumental guitar music by focusing on the groove. All-stars such as Keith Carlock, Anton Fig, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Dave Weckl often contribute on drums, with bassists Will Lee, James Genus, and Reggie Washington.

New York-based percussion and piano quartet Yarn/Wire gives the world premiere performance of Parallel Prints by Marcel Zaes at The Stone on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 8:30pm. Parallel Prints, which will be accompanied by video art created by Seattle-based artist Eli Backer, calls for each performer to realize a chosen graphic sequence against a metronome by repeating subtle dynamic shades on a single pitch. The world premiere performance features Yarn/Wire members Laura Barger, piano, Russell Greenberg, percussion, Sae Hashimoto, percussion, with special guests to be announced.

We are thrilled to present the Brooklyn debut of the Makanda Project, a 13-piece ensemble that has become an important part of the Boston jazz scene. Led by pianist, bandleader and arranger, John Kordalewski, the Makanda Project explores and celebrates the richness of the unrecorded music of multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator Dr. Makanda Ken McIntyre.

Makanda, who lived and taught in New York, was known primarily for leading his own ensembles and had 12 recordings as a leader-- performing on alto saxophone, flute, bass clarinet, oboe and bassoon. But he was also a prolific composer. When Makanda died in 2001, his family found over 350 pieces that had not been recorded. John has written arrangements to over 60 of Makanda’s compositions. They are marked by a distinctive rhythmic and lyrical quality that will surprise and delight you. Makanda’s compositions cover a wide range, including "straight ahead" jazz pieces, gorgeous ballads, pieces based on complex rhythmic structures, calypsos, and "free jazz" pieces. Www.mkmjazz.com
