“[Paul Bollenback] is soulful, sophisticated and spiritual…” —JazzTimes

Acclaimed jazz guitarists Vinny Valentino & Paul Bollenback bring their formidable group to Zinc on Monday, October 10. They’re supported by bassist John Benitez and drummer Steve Smith.

Versatile is an understatement when describing guitarist and composer Vinny Valentino. Playing guitar since age six, this native Virginian began touring in a progressive rock band while still in high school. At age 16, influenced by the music of George Benson, Vinny began pursuing Jazz as a career. He recalls, “The turning point for me was hearing George Benson in concert; I had never heard anybody play like that. It was an eye-opening experience.”

Vinny has shared the stage with such jazz greats as Steve Smith, Tom Coster, Russell Ferrante, Tom Scott, Gary Bartz, Victor Bailey, John Benitez, Peter Erskine, Dave Weckl, John Patitucci, Randy Brecker, George Benson, Steve Gadd, Chick Corea, Dennis Chambers, Bill Evans, and Jimmy McGriff.

Paul Bollenback, a thinking person’s jazz guitarist with a clean ‘n’ fat tone and a barrel full of chops, has been impressing listeners as a sideman and, increasingly, as a leader in recent years. But inquisitive minds want to know: Is he mainstream? Left-of-mainstream? Or a work-in-progress? Probably all of the above. Bollenback has been heard alongside saxophonists Gary Thomas, Gary Bartz, and especially as a commanding, critical 1/3 of Joey DeFrancesco’s organ trio.

Showtimes are at 7:00 pm & 8:30 pm. Tickets: $25 in advance / $30 day of show. For more info, visit https://www.zincjazz.com.

  • “...one of the greatest living jazz pianists.” —LOS ANGELES TIMES

Acclaimed jazz pianist Alan Broadbent brings his trio to the Zinc Bar for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Tuesday, October 11. He's supported by bassist Harvie S and drummer Billy Mintz.

An unsung hero of the acoustic piano, Alan Broadbent is a highly lyrical and melodic bebopper/post-bopper who has cited Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanagan, Nat "King" Cole, and Red Garland as some of his favorite pianists. Raised in New Zealand, he moved to Boston in 1966 to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. After staying on the road with Woody Herman (for whom he was a writer, arranger, and soloist) from 1969 to 1972, he settled in Los Angeles. Broadbent went on to work as a sideman for Chet Baker, tenor saxmen Warne Marsh and Gary Foster, and the late singer Irene Kral in the '70s, and with Bud Shank and arranger Nelson Riddle in the '80s.

The '90s found him writing arrangements for Natalie Cole, Marian McPartland, Scott Hamilton, and others and playing alongside bassist Charlie Haden, tenor saxman Ernie Watts, and drummer Larance Marable in Haden's Quartet West - a unique and conceptual L.A.-based group that is known for including bits of dialogue from film-noir movies between bop performances.

Showtimes are at 7:00 pm & 8:30 pm. Tickets: $30 in advance / $35 at the door. For more info, visit https://www.zincjazz.com.

  • Join us on October 14th as Flushing Town Hall presents “The Swinging Sounds of Coleman Hawkins” featuring Lew Tabackin and his ensemble.

Saxophonist Lew Tabackin, one of New York City’s most notable Jazz musicians, was presented a lifetime achievement award on July 16th at the restaurant and music venue Birdland by The Jazz Foundation of America.

Tabackin has shared the stage with numerous other Jazz luminaries such as Clark Terry, Donald Byrd, Elvin Jones, Cab Calloway, and Mel Lewis.

On October 14th, Lew Tabackin will play tribute to the great Coleman Hawkins live at the historic Flushing Town Hall Theater, a fitting location considering its significance along the Queens Jazz Trail.

Tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins was one of the first saxophonists to bring attention to the saxophone as a solo instrument in 1939 when he played it on the song “Body and Soul”.

Hawkins is credited as the first major saxophonist in Jazz History. His inventive style of improvising influenced many leading Jazz figures such as Ben Webster, Chu Berry, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane.

As part of this performance, Tabackin will be supported by pianist Jeb Patton, Gerald Cammon on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums. In addition, a special guest trumpet player will appear and play some of the groundbreaking music that Coleman Hawkins made popular in the international jazz world.

“The Swinging Sounds of Coleman Hawkins” will feature an array of music that Hawkins himself played during his tenure with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, recordings with Benny Goodman, Django Reinhardht, and many others.

Don’t miss out on this important milestone concert!
