  • For 150 years, The Bethany Baptist Church of Newark has been one of the leading African American houses of worship, and for 20 of those years, the Church has featured monthly jazz in its Saturday evening Vesper services.

    Our featured performers in March are the Nat Adderley Jr. Quartet. Growing up in Teaneck, NJ in a famed jazz family (the son of brass legend Nat Adderley and nephew of alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley), Nat Jr. blazed his own path as a jazz pianist and longtime music director for Luther Vandross.
  • When Composer and guitarist Paul Abler suddenly passed away in March of 2017, his wife discovered many songs not yet recorded. "The Last Goodbye" is comprised of unpublished and reimagined compositions of Paul Abler performed by the NJ based jazz group, "The Joe Rizzolution Trio", with Nat Jannof on Guitar, Jose Rodriguez on Bass, Joe Rizzolo on Drums and acting as musical director and pianist for the album is Tomoko Ohno, Paul's friend and collaborator. With Tomoko's guidance, Paul's memory, spirit, and style come through each song.

    Arts for Art is proud to pay tribute to the late, great pianist, activist and educator, Connie Crothers. She represents what is best in our community of Multicultural Improvised Creative Arts. She believed in and actively fostered community. She stood up for social justice. She held spontaneous, improvised music as the highest creative goal. Most of the participating artists studied or played with Connie, and they are all living this tradition of community, compassion and justice.

    Shift is a new(ish) series for creative and experimental music in the heart of Williamsburg. It has quickly built a reputation for boundary-pushing excellence, diverse curation, great sound, and adventurous audiences. Shift deftly taps the creativity that NY has to offer and the intimate space draws in performers from Mumbai to Buenos Aires. Presenting partnerships have included The Stone, Experimental Intermedia, and Arts for Arts. Steve Smith (The New York Times, The New Yorker) describes Shift as "a burgeoning hub of arts activity.

  • The world-famous Harlem Gospel Choir is the most renowned gospel choir in America and a preeminent gospel choir worldwide. The Choir presents the finest singers and musicians from Harlem's Black Churches and the New York/Tri-State area. The Harlem Gospel Choir has shared its message of love and inspiration with thousands of people from various nations and cultures. The Harlem Gospel Choir's songs of gospel and inspiration will touch the depths of your soul and lift your spirit to angelic heights, with sounds that are unfettered, joyous, and inspirational.

    Deeply rooted in the history of the African-American slave trade, black gospel music can be traced back to the 1700s when African slaves brought their unique African musical heritage to America and combined it with their new faith – Christianity. Out of the hardship and the trials of slavery, this unique musical tradition came to be, and forever changed music as we know it. Blues, Soul, and Rock-and-Roll…they all have origins in black gospel music. Harlem Gospel Choir presents modern gospel classics as performed in the black churches of Harlem today.

  • J A Granelli performs new music for solo bass guitar from his new album "Why Can't I Be beautiful Like you".
    Using loops, digital effects and pre recorded material, Granelli will perform new composed and improvised music in this unique venue. "Why Can't I Be beautiful Like you" spins a lush web of texture and melody to paint a picture of life, loss and the redemptive power of art.
  • In honor of Black History Month the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center in Red Bank, the home of Count Basie, presents "An Out of Africa Experience," with The Brandon McCune Trio and The Black Wine Guy Experience (BWGE) with MJ Towler. Pianist Brandon McCune was the 1998 Ambassador of Jazz to Africa, and he has accompanied the best in Jazz, such as bassist Buster Williams, Wynton Marsalis and the incomparable Betty Carter, and more. MJ Towler of the BWGE, a popular podcast, has made a colorful splash into wine culture, and will take you on a wine tasting journey through South Africa's, black-owned vineyards that will broaden your grapevine appreciation. This is a fundraiser to support the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, a National Historic Landmark.

  • Concluding our Black History Month Trilogy is a fun and funky mix of music and cinema. Soul Men is a chronological journey of the most iconic African American singers who helped to define the genre dubbed "Soul Music.” Starting from the classics to the big screen, vocalist Billy Cliff will lead the audience through the works of Isaac Hayes’s composition in Shaft, Curtis Mayfield’s soundtrack in SuperFly and Marvin Gaye’s film score in Trouble Man.

    Billy Cliff has sung with artists Freddie Jackson, Angela Bofill. He has also been chosen as the lead vocalist for Kool & The Gang, the jazz Group Spyro Gyra, The Blues Brothers Band, Dianne Reeves and many more!
