The Emerging Artist Festival, now in its 5th year, celebrates youth involvement in jazz.

On Friday evening, the VJC will once again team up with local high schools and universities as well as Gallery Walk and Downtown Brattleboro Alliance to present youth jazz ensembles in local venues, including the Boys and Girls Club and the 118 Elliot Street Gallery for evening performances.

During the day on Saturday, the VJC will team up with area schools and the Vermont Association of Jazz Educators to feature student groups who will perform for each other and be coached by clinicians including festival headliner, Dan Wilson.

Daytime activities will culminate in a clinic offered by Wilson to area youth and aficionados of jazz and blues.

Saturday evening at 8:00 PM, Rising Star Award-winning jazz guitarist Wilson will perform the marquee event for the general public.

Dan Wilson has been hailed for his performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, his work with Christian McBride’s ‘Tip City’ and his Grammy-nominated recording as a member of Joey DeFrancesco’s Project Freedom band.

Wilson’s musicianship was cultivated while growing up in the church in Akron, Ohio.

That connection with gospel and uplifted spirit permeates his work as a solo artist (he has three albums out as a leader) and informs his appearances as a sideman with Eric Marienthal, Russell Malone, Les McCann, René Marie, Jeff Hamilton, David Sanborn, Dave Stryker and others.

Sponsored by Marcy Hermansader in memory of Jonathan Flaccus.

  • Nina Simone married art and activism during her legendary Carnegie Hall performance in 1964, leading to a historic live album and definitive recording of her civil rights anthem “Mississippi Goddam.” Boldly stepping into Simone’s shoes is powerhouse vocalist and Grammy winner Ledisi, whose 2021 album Ledisi Sings Nina showcases “both the diversity and depth of Simone’s musicianship, and the breathtaking range and reach of Ledisi’s own voice” (The New York Times). Taking on Simone’s emotionally searing, socially conscious songs, Ledisi returns to Carnegie Hall to pay tribute to one of the icons of 20th-century music.

  • Hailing from the musically prolific West African nation of Mali, guitarist and composer Habib Koité has been called the biggest pop star of the region by Rolling Stone. He is a modern-day troubadour descended from a noble line of griots, from whom he inherited his passion for music. His grandfather played the kamele n’goni – a traditional string instrument associated with the legendary hunters from the Wassoulou region of Mali. Koité is perhaps best known for his danssa doso, a unique blend of local rhythms with traditional hunter’s music, and often plays his guitar on open strings in the style of a n’goni. His latest studio album Kharifa, released in 2019, was recorded in Bamako and is rich with the musical traditions and instruments of his country.
