Acclaimed Venezuelan jazz pianist Luis Perdomo brings his trio to Zinc on Tuesday, August 2 for a splendid evening of jazz piano. He's supported by Ugonna Okegwo on bass and Adam Cruz on drums.

Ever since he came to New York in 1993 from Venezuela, Perdomo has emerged as one of the most in-demand sidemen—as evidenced by his celebrated work with a wide array of jazz and Latin stars—from Ravi Coltrane to Ray Barretto, and by his six critically acclaimed recordings as a leader. The release of his magnificent new, Hot Tone label debut CD, 22, features bassist Mimi Jones’ supple, deep bass lines and drummer Rudy Royston’s quicksilver rhythms, in a trio he christened The Controlling Ear Unit. “I wanted to create an environment where a sensitive player could make his own musical choices, without fear of the consequences,” Perdomo says. “The word ‘unit’ is appropriate because although the current group is a trio, it doesn’t really have to be restrained to that. It could have a different format, depending on what the music calls for.”

Acclaimed pianist Uri Caine brings his formidable trio to Zinc for a splendid evening of jazz piano on Tuesday, August 16. He’s supported by bassist Mark Helias and drummer Ben Perowsky.

Jazz pianist/composer Uri Caine brings an eclectic array of disciplines and influences to his music. His own Jewish heritage, his classical and jazz training, and his interest in electronics combine in ambitious hybrids that are often challenging but always inventive.

Caine has received commissions to compose music for the American Composers Orchestra, The Arditti Quartet, The Vienna Volksoper, Concerto Koln, The Basel Chamber Orchestra, and The Beaux Arts Trio among others. His most recent orchestral composition “Sunburst” was performed in June 2016 at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Sicily. He also served as the Director of The Venice Biennale in 2003. Caine has received grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, The Pew Foundation, and The USA Artist Fellowships and has performed at numerous festivals including the North Sea, Monterey, Montreal, and Newport Jazz Festival as well as classical festivals like the Salzburg Festival, the Munich Opera, Holland Festival, IRCAM and Great Performers at Lincoln Center. He has recorded over 30 albums as a leader and was nominated for a Grammy® Award for The Othello Syndrome (Winter and Winter) in 2009.

Ron is currently a Contributor/Writer for Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Ron has performed and recorded in over 30 countries as a bandleader and ensemble performer, and is well established on the international jazz scene.

Ron’s style of guitar playing and composing is a blend of jazz and other American styles such as soul, rhythm and blues, pop, as well as Caribbean and Latin, having been influenced by his Philippine roots. He brings it all together in his unique approach to playing jazz guitar. Considered one of the most versatile guitarists in the world, he is adept in styles such as African, Rock, R+B, Brazilian, Pop, Country, Calypso, Reggae, Soul, Funk, and Classical, but his greatest passion has always been jazz. Acclaimed jazz guitarists Gene Bertoncini & Roni Ben-Hur return to Zinc for a special collaborative evening of music on Monday, August 29.

Gene Bertoncini is one of the pre-eminent jazz guitarists active today. His fluid technique and lyricism have won him international praise and accolades as the “Segovia of jazz.” An eloquent and versatile improviser, Mr. Bertoncini has been heard with an extraordinary range of jazz greats, including performances and recordings with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, and Paul Desmond among others, as well as such distinguished singers as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, Vic Damone, and Eydie Gorme.

Jazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism, and ability to charm peers, students, and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the flame alive and pure, burning in every note… He’s a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.” Roni — born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, based in the New York City area — has recorded a dozen-plus album as leader or co-leader, with The New York Times praising his “crisp, fluid style” and Time Out New York calling him “a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist.” He has developed a rare facility in both straight-ahead jazz and samba/bossa-nova styles, underscored by his work with masters in each field, from bebop piano sage Barry Harris and winds ace Frank Wess to beloved Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade and composer Marcos Valle.
