    Acclaimed jazz guitarist Steve Cardenas brings his formidable trio to Zinc on Monday, February 13. He's supported by Ben Allison on bass and Allison Miller on drums.

    Steve Cardenas has many diverse credits as a performer and recording artist. Beginning his musical career in his hometown of Kansas City, he has been an integral part of the New York City jazz community since 1995. Steve has performed with many well-known and highly esteemed musicians. Notably, he was a longstanding member of the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band (which later became the Paul Motian Octet) as well as Joey Baron's band, Killer Joey. Steve is currently a member of the Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra, Steve Swallow Quintet and the Ben Allison Band. He has toured the U.S., Canada, Europe, and South America extensively, performing at numerous jazz festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and Montreux Jazz Festival several times. In addition, Steve leads his own trio, performing at various venues around New York City.

  • Monthly Jazz Jams return live at Flushing Town Hall the second Wednesday of every month! Open to professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz, music educators and serious hobbyists, Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jams invites musicians to perform at Flushing Town Hall. All are welcome, regardless of instrument (vocalists, too!). Our Steinway baby grand and drum kit are available at each Jam. Health and safety protocols will be in place so bring a mask, and feel free to bring your own microphone. House Band and Jam Sessions are led by Carol Sudhalter, with Joe Vincent Tranchina, Scott Neumann and Eric Lemon. Don't play, but love Jazz? Come listen!

    FTH's Jazz Jam house band leader, Carol Sudhalter, plays flute, baritone and tenor sax and has been running our Louis Armstrong Legacy Monthly Jazz Jams for the last four years. And for the last 17 months since March 2020, more than 200 musicians from over a dozen countries as far as New Zealand, Italy and South Africa, have participated in the virtual monthly jams. Over 7,000 viewers from across the globe have enjoyed the music and tuned in to the monthly jams to listen as the venue moved its programming online.

    Acclaimed jazz guitarist David Gilmore brings his formidable quartet to Zinc on Monday, February 27. He’s supported by Victor Gould on piano, Mark Lewandowski on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums.

    David Gilmore has performed and recorded with many of today’s most influential artists, including Wayne Shorter, Steve Coleman, Christian McBride, Dave Douglas, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Randy Brecker, Lenny White, Stanley Clarke, Sam Rivers, and many others. His latest release, Transitions (2017 Criss Cross Records) is one of Downbeat Magazine’s top CDs of 2017. He was also recently voted into both the Critic’s Poll and Reader’s Poll of 2017. Gilmore’s playing has been compared to guitarists as diverse as George Benson and Jimi Hendrix. Gilmore has been the recipient of numerous grants, including two Chamber Music of America, New Jazz Works Composer Grants, and nominated for the prestigious Doris Duke Artist Award. Committed to an improvisational approach that reflects a global awareness, he conducts master classes around the world, and is a Professor at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston.

  • On Saturday, June 3, Under Cover Music Fest will draw more than a thousand residents and visitors to the Sloan Street Lot in South Orange to enjoy great music from 9 cover bands with no cover change, dancing, local food, beer and kids activities.

    This year’s exciting line-up will feature the talent of world-class local musicians covering a diverse selection of the greatest hits from the Foo Fighters & The Pretenders (Mark Murphy’s Music Student Bands), Pearl Jam (Charlie Pollock & Friends), Rihanna (Mike Griot Presents: Vivian Sessoms), Chaka Khan (Autumn Jones), REM (South Orange Crush), Harry Styles (Misha Hankey & Mark Murphy’s Music Faculty Band), Tom Petty (Matt & The Moondogs) and Stevie Wonder (Curtis Winchester & Friends). Between sets DJ Thomas Schmid will be spinning the latest tunes to keep everyone dancing. The rain date for UCMF is Sunday, June 4 from 12-8PM.

    RUBYBOO ENTERTAINMENT presents A collection of artistry by Trumpeter Willis Wilson and Vocalist Traci Tota: classic and contemporary Jazz styles.

    Wilson is noted for his independent sound - a collection of trumpeting artistry that fuses Jazz, R&B, Funk, Hip-Hop, classic and contemporary Jazz styles to create a new wave in the Contemporary and Classic Jazz formats.

    At age 10 young Wilson taught himself to play the family piano. By age 12 he was playing the trumpet, and in high school Wilson started to form collaborative sounds on his own terms. Wilson continued studying the craft of Jazz music at Harlem's own City College. He also studied trumpet with Carnegie Hall Jazz Band Director Jon Faddis and Noted trumpeter and educator Jimmy Owens. After being trained under Sid Baker of the NY Philharmonic in classical music, Wilson was ready for his tour with Mercer Ellington and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Wilson's CDs "Conversations" and "Revelations" have both received praise worthy reviews .
  • "Healing Through the Arts" is a special event designed to provide opportunities for self-care, resiliency, and healing through participation in arts activities. The event will feature visual arts courses in crafting and painting, yoga, meditation, dance, and music that will serve as a medium for expression to address and improve mental health and depression.

    Healing through the Arts is a free event to educate women, men, and children about different arts techniques that help improve mental health, and cope with daily stress.

    More about Healing Through the Arts:

    “Healing through the Arts” event will bring together men, women, and children from different cultural backgrounds. The themes of this event would center around healthier communications, empathy, togetherness, anxiety, stress, depression, mental/emotional health, postpartum depression, and other issues through the process of participating in art making. We hope to break the stigma that depression and mental health needs still carry in our society. The main goal of the event is to provide technical instruction on various arts techniques, and how to apply these skills to manage daily pressures and depressive symptoms.

    Through an afternoon of engagement with professional Artists, Social Workers, and Health educators the community will have the opportunity to share, learn, and express how they feel, and realize the next actions needed to overcome unconscious past or present traumas, and open new doors to better quality of life.

    Thus, "Healing Through the Arts” is a place where the community feels supported, safe, and can learn new skills, learn how to understand their own feelings, thoughts, and actions to provide a healthy environment for themselves, their children, and significant others.
