Martin Pizzarelli and Friends
Bassist Martin Pizzarelli returns to Jazz on the Back Deck after his SOLD-OUT show last year! A member of New Jersey’s first jazz family, Martin’s own impressive career as a bass player spans several decades and includes dozens of record dates and hundreds of concerts around the globe in various formations, often accompanying his father. Among his peers, he is considered one of the most swinging bassists on the scene and a “keeper of the flame” who masters the style like no one else today. Bring your own chairs and refreshments and enjoy live entertainment atop the Morris Museum’s elevated parking deck. Stunning sunsets, social distance, and glorious live music combine for a series of unforgettable evenings.
Tesla Quartet
Praised for their “superb capacity to find the inner heart of everything they play, regardless of era, style, or technical demand” (The International Review of Music), the Tesla Quartet brings refinement and prowess to both new and established repertoire. Dubbed “technically superb” by The Strad, the Tesla Quartet has won top prizes in numerous international competitions, most recently taking Second Prize as well as the Haydn Prize and Canadian Commission Prize at the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition. Bring your own chairs and refreshments and enjoy live entertainment atop the Morris Museum’s elevated parking deck. Stunning sunsets, social distance, and glorious live music combine for a series of unforgettable evenings.
Tony Middleton 88th Birthday Celebration
“Middleton is a suave baritone whose unique voice contains the bluesy facility of a Joe Williams and the authority of William Warfield.”
—Detroit News
Join us in celebrating acclaimed vocalist Tony Middleton’s 88th Birthday on Saturday, June 25. He’s supported by pianist Tadataka Unno, bassist Jim Cammack, and drummer Dwayne “Cook” Broadnax.
Tony has been aptly described as having a rare ability and a vocal talent unsurpassed. His career has included record recording, Broadway, commercials, television, and the cabaret circuit here and abroad. He lived and performed in Paris and Europe on the jazz circuit for a number of years and gets called back time and again.
Tony started his career as the lead singer of the Willows, having composed his hit recording of Church Bells May Ring, and is still in demand to sing with the Willows at Doo Wop concerts and has done several PBS Doo Wop shows.
Tony has performed the music of Burt Bacharach, whose recording Don’t Ever Leave Me received a Grammy Award nomination. He has performed for Quincy Jones and Cy Coleman with their music. Having appeared at the Apollo along with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Big Mabel and Slappy White, he has also sung with Cissy Houston, Nell Carter, and Della Reese.
Tony was the lead in “Cabin in the Sky” and one of the featured singers in the Broadway show Purlie. He performed in concert at the City Center with the Alvin Ailey Dancers in which he sang the “Mary Lou Williams’s Mass”, and was one of the headliners at Lincoln Center at the 55th Birthday Tribute to the late Charlie Parker.
Showtime is at 7:30 pm. Tickets: $25 in advance / $30 day of show. For more info, call (212) 477-9462 or visit https://www.zincjazz.com.
