The Checkout: Terri Lyne Carrington & All-Stars In Concert Fighting For Gender Justice

The Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice teamed up with The Checkout for a special presentation.

Last February, we put on a concert with professors from the Institute: Terri Lyne Carrington (drums), Kris Davis (piano), Linda May Han Oh (bass), Tia Fuller (sax), and more.  It was a memorable concert that took aim at the Real Book, and asked a fundamental question: Why aren't there more women composers represented in the jazz standard tradition?

On Wednesday, we presented a livestream interview with Terri Lyne Carrington addressing these issues which she and her partner at the Institute, Aja Burrell Wood, are tackling head on. On their Jazz and Gender Justice webpage, they are providing lead sheets of all the music featured at this exceptional concert, available now for musicians to download. They intend to add an additional 100 pieces of music in the future.

Tonight at 8pm, we bring you the full concert film, a program that celebrates some of these "new standards" by women composers, compiled by Carrington herself.
