For years, Heather Aimee O'Neill made a career helping other writers find their voices. As a teacher, editor, and writing coach, she worked behind the scenes, guiding other people's stories into the world.
Then, in her late forties, she found her own story - not on the page; she'd already done that -but in public. Heather quietly went about quietly writing a novel. Not telling her students. Not telling most of her friends.
When The Irish Goodbye was published last year, it quickly became one of the most celebrated debut novels of the year, earning a Read With Jenna selection and introducing readers to a moving story about grief, family, and three sisters trying to make sense of a shared loss.
But when we spoke recently for The Third Story podcast, she spoke about the novel itself and about the years before anyone knew it existed.
