On this edition of The Art of the Story, trombonist, composer and bandleader Clifton Anderson makes a rare New York club date with his sextet on Friday, May 15th, 8:30 p.m. at The Iridium.
Anderson has shared the stage and studio with a diverse array of artists, from his long-running tenure with his uncle Sonny Rollins, to McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie as well pop stars Stevie Wonder and Keith Richards.
Born in Harlem to a musical family, Anderson received his first trombone from his uncle Sonny Rollins at age seven.
After training with such masters as Barry Harris and Reggie Workman, he joined Rollins's band, touring and recording with the tenor sax titan for 25 years.
Anderson has been a bandleader for many years. He's known for his rich personal trombone tone and strong lyrical compositions, drawing from hard bop, Latin, or Calypso with a focus on melody.
