Dr. Katie Singer holds a doctorate in American Studies from Rutgers University-Newark and an MFA in creative writing from FDU. She’s currently teaching African American Studies at UCLA.
Even though Dr. Singer is currently teaching African American Studies at UCLA, she's never forgotten her Newark roots. She's the author of a new book Alien Soil: Oral Histories of Great Migration Newark.

Dr. Singer has compiled and written about the compelling stories from Newark’s Krueger-Scott African American Oral History project to offer insight to the city’s powerful Black historical narrative and beyond….whether it be politics, churches, labor music and art and the migration to Newark itself…..
In the late 1990’s, an ambitious oral history project that conducted over 100 interviews was conducted for what was intended to be the Kreuger-Scott Cultural Center, but that center never materialized.
The Glendale, California resident, who was mentored by the legendary historian and educator Dr. Clement Price, has now compiled and written about those powerful stories from the oral history project.
