Four 40-year veterans of the local music scene may be making the best music of their lives right now. Early in the pandemic, Mike Griot, Kelton Cooper, Ron Thompson, and Gene Lake formed an original blues band called Blues People. What has resulted is a series of inspiring shows and a well-reviewed debut album called The Skin I’m In.

On this episode of The Art of the Story, WBGO's Dave Popkin talks to Cooper and Griot about the the songs they co-wrote that focus on many societal issues like racism and police brutality.

Blues People has been nominated for Best New Artist and Best Debut Album awards by Blues Blast Magazine. The band will travel to Memphis in January to compete in the International Blues Challenge.
