Richard Codey, who served as acting governor of New Jersey and was the state’s longest-serving lawmaker, died yesterday after a brief illlness at the age of 79.
His family announced his death on his Facebook page.
Dick Cody was a leading advocate for mental health awareness and funding, Codey largely withdrew from public life after retiring from the State Senate in January 2024 after a half a century in the Legislature.
During his 50 years of public service, Codey championed a statewide ban on indoor smoking, created the first inspector general position and led a policy of steroid testing in school sports.
During a 2018 interview with WBGO’s Statehouse reporter Phil Gregory, Codey talked about the need to stop 3D printed guns.
"What's changed is that they are getting very popular. They're easy to make and they're not very expensive. For those reasons, we want to move now as quickly as possible."
Eight years ago on the Governors' Perspectives with Kent Manahan, he was asked about his legacy.
"What stood out was widening the New Jersey Turnpike, taking down tolls one way, a new stadium for the Jets and Giants, a smoking ban.
When asked is if it was the best job he ever had?
"Without question, loved every second and moment of it. For those people who said I should have run for Governor, listen I'm happy. I've got my nitch in history and I'm proud of it."
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka issued a statement following Cody's passing.
“Governor Cody was a friend who supported me early on, when few did. He was committed to people, always looking for ways to make their lives better. And he was incredibly loyal. He will be missed by those who considered him a friend, as well as those who respected him from the other side of the legislative aisle."
New Jersey Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz says New Jersey has lost a true legend.
"Governor Codey was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, passionate basketball coach, a proud Seton Hall fan, and a tireless public servant who dedicated his life to the people of New Jersey.
