The Jersey City mayor’s race is headed for a runoff next month between downtown City Councilman James Solomon and disgraced former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey. Solomon was the top vote-getter with almost 30% at the time the race was called. McGreevey followed closely with 25.5%. Because neither candidate got 50%, voters will head to the polls again on Dec. 2 as the two candidates face off. The election saw McGreevey make a bold return to politics after being outed as gay and resigning amid a 2004 sex scandal. Incumbent Mayor Steve Fulop announced he would not seek reelection after losing the Democratic gubernatorial primary to governor-elect Mikie Sherrill. He has since accepted a lucrative private sector job in Manhattan.
