Trumpeter/Flugelhornist Joe Magnarelli has displayed his fire and hush with The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi's Jazz Orchestra, Lionel Hampton and Maria Schneider, as well as co-founding the New York Hard Bop Quintet, and working with singers Laverne Butler and Harry Connick, Jr.
For Decidedly So, his third release for the Cellar Live label, Joe assembled a stellar quintet, with trombonist Steve Davis, pianist Jeremy Manasia, bassist Clovis Nicholas and drummer Rodney Green. Captured at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in front of a live audience, it's a versatile program of standards, an update on the feel of Thelonious Monk, a salute to his late wife, organist Akiko Tsuruga, and a celebration of legendary Boston Celtics guard Dennis Johnson.
