Don Was, the six-time Grammy Award-winning musician, producer and composer, pays tribute to his hometown of Detroit with his Pan-Detroit Ensemble, made up of outstanding Motor City musicians, including long-time collaborators, saxophonist David McMurray and keyboardist Luis Resto, trombonist Vincent Chandler, trumpeter John Douglas, guitarist Wayne Gerard, drummer Jeff Canady, percussionist Mahindi Masai, and vocalist Steffanie Christi'an.
As Was says, "There's a unique sound and feel to Detroit that permeates all around; a rawness and lack of pretension and an unmistakable groove that reflects the people and culture of the entire city."
I saw this band last year in Woodstock and they knocked me out! It was recorded in a studio in Detroit, BUT also in performance in Detroit, and at S.F. Jazz in San Francisco, where they were joined by special guest, trumpeter Terence Blanchard.
