Gary Bartz Eternal Tenure Of Sound: Damage Control

Saxophonist Gary Bartz became a Jazz Messenger when Art Blakey played Gary's father's club in Baltimore in 1965. Saxophonist John Gilmore was leaving the Messengers and Gary got the gig.

Gary Bartz is an NEA Jazz Master. He is one of the last surviving links to the bands of Blakey, Max Roach, McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus and Miles Davis.

This is his first studio album in a dozen years. Bartz does new moves on classics by Eddie Del Barrio, McCoy Tyner, Curtis Mayfield and more, with special guests Theo Croker, Brandee Younger, Kamasi Washington, Nile Rodgers and Terrace Martin joining the nucleus of players and vocalists that make this a most engaging listen.

Hear a track from the new Gary Bartz release each morning at 8:20 AM, another feature made possible by the members of WBGO.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
