Sometime in the 1980’s while out on the road, pianist Kenny Kirkland put his headphones on Branford Marsalis’ ears and said, “check this out!” It was Keith Jarrett’s My Song album. After 5 minutes Marsalis wouldn't give the headphones back. And when the plane landed, he went out and bought every Keith Jarrett album he could find.
Belonging was a 1974 recording by Keith Jarrett, featuring the debut of his European quartet, with saxophonist Jan Garbarek, bassist Palle Danielsson and drummer Jon Christensen. Here, the long-time Marsalis Quartet, with pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner do their interpretation of this Jarrett classic, true to track order performance, but with their own twist. For example, on "'Long As You're Living Yours" Branford told drummer Faulkner not to think of European drummer Christensen, but rather Funk Drummer icon James Gadson.
Although true in part to Jarrett's original, the sense memory of the Marsalis Quartet guarantees you let this foursome play through.
