Jazz is a music for the Ages, a music between the ages, bringing newbies and legacies together to revel in the intended spirit. When musicians from different generations come together to create, the result is an optimism that can't be manufactured. It's a natural inclination, that looks back through the rich history of this music, but at the same time, finds new musical paths to explore.
In our continuing celebration of Black History Month, we shine a light brightly on tenor saxophonist Houston Person, at 90, making new grooves with 36-year-old pianist Joe Alterman.
With bassist Kevin Smith and drummer Justin Chesarek, these live performances, captured at different venues in Alterman's home state of Georgia, pull nuggets from the books of Van Heusen and Cahn, Benny Carter, Buddy Johnson, and more, closing the release with a soulful rendition of You Are My Sunshine.
In a time when folks are searching for corners rather than common ground, what a groove it is to hear it when folks bring generations together like this. I've never had brisket for breakfast, but I'm gonna give it a try.
