Drummer Brandon Sanders is a believer. As he says, "no matter how rough life gets, no matter where you're from, if you stick to your mission, the tables will turn." His mission has taken him from Compton, California, to Berklee in Boston, where he formed a lasting friendship with vibraphonist Warren Wolf, and on to New York. Those formative years also included hanging out at his grandmother Ernestine's jazz club in Kansas City, exposing Brandon to the creative spirits of Jimmy Smith, Grant Green and Lou Donaldson.
On this, his second album as leader, Brandon is joined by pianist Keith Brown, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, saxophonist Chris Lewis and bassist David Wong in a program reimagining Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Tony Williams, a nod to Grandmother Ernestine and an engaging interpretation of a Michael Jackson classic, featuring guest Vocalist Christie Dashiell.
