Something Else! Soul Jazz

Soul Jazz - Bob Porter wrote a book about it, how people went out and bought radios so they could hear it, feel it, talk about it. When you have musical subject like that....why, It's Something Else!

Something Else! is an all-star collective, featuring saxophonists Vincent Herring and Wayne Escoffery, trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, guitarist Paul Bollenback, pianist David Kikoski, bassist Essiet Essiet and timekeeper Otis Brown III. It's soulful music played by an outstanding septet of today's top musicians, who are obviously having a good time, sharing nuggets from Horace Silver, Eddie Harris, Stanley Turrentine, Herbie Hancock, Pee Wee Ellis, Donald Byrd, and Roy Hargrove. They even show a soulful side on a hip treatment of John Coltrane's Naima.

Put a charge in the car, get out on the road with this one, but be prepared to miss your exit!

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning on Daybreak. He's the winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year Award and the recipient of the 2021 Marian McPartland-Willis Conover Award for Career Achievement in Broadcasting from the Jazz Journalists Association. Gary hosts the morning show each weekday from 8am til noon. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
