One of Juilliard's ensemble coaches, Ulysses Owens Jr., accompanied students from the institution's Dave Brubeck Ensemble to WBGO's performance space recently for participation in WBGO's annual JAM studio sessions.
Each of Juilliard Jazz’s small ensembles is named after a jazz legend. This does not mean the named ensemble will solely perform the works of that artist, but invoking these names reminds us of our music’s great history and its interconnectedness. In addition, ensemble coaches will incorporate important aspects of each artist’s work into their ensemble teaching throughout the year. Wynton Marsalis serves as the Director of Juilliard Jazz, and Aaron Flagg is Chair and Associate Director.
The ensemble performed music primarily by Hazel Scott and Ginger Smock which was included in an early April program at The Juilliard School in Paull Hall.
The student musicians are as follows:
Sion Song: Alto Saxophone BM
Daniel Cohen: Tenor Saxophone BM
Ilai Macaggi: Trombone BM
Bruce Acosta: Guitar MM
Caelan Cardello: Piano MM
Caylen Bryant: Bass MM
Hank Allen-Barfield: Drums MM
Ulysses Owens, Jr.: Ensemble Coach
