Four young brothers started singing together in the Baptist Church Choir in Carthage, Mississippi in the early 1950s. In later years, they reunited in Southern California, where they started to tour folk clubs in the area. They performed off the radar for the next decade until Pete Seeger helped get them a spot at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
George, Joe, Lester, and Wooley Chambers, better known as The Chambers Brothers, soon came to the attention of Columbia Records, and it was on August 1st, 1966, that they recorded their best known song, “Time Has Come Today.” It was soon released as a single, but it flopped. It took a couple of years before Columbia decided to re-release it with a different, slightly longer edit.
So, it wasn't until 1968 that “Time Has Come Today” became a major hit and the only Top 10 single for the Chambers Brothers.
