One could argue that The Temptations’ greatest lead singer was David Ruffin, even though he wasn't one of the original members of the group. He had replaced Elbridge Bryant in 1963. He was with The Temptations during their peak years between 1964 and 1968. Most of their hits during this period featured David or Eddie Kendricks on lead vocals, sometimes both.
It was 55 years ago, on June 27th, 1968, that David Ruffin was officially fired from The Temptations. It was shocking news to Temptations fans. The reason given was that he missed an engagement in Cleveland, Ohio because he went to the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey instead to see one of Dean Martin's daughters perform.
David Ruffin did go on to a solo career. His biggest hits as a solo artist were “My Whole World Ended” in 1969 and “Walk Away from Love” in 1975. David Ruffin, one of the greatest of the Temptations, was only 50 years old when he died in 1991.
