Louis Hayes

Drummer and NEA Jazz Master Louis Hayes has been gettin' it exactly right for decades, testifying with Cannonball Adderley, Woody Shaw, Yusef Lateef, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson and countless others who reveled in the rhythms Louis laid down. With his new recording, Exactly Right!, Hayes finds himself driving a quintet including saxophonist Abraham Burton, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist David Hazeltine and bassist Dezron Douglas, who also co-produced the album. Alongside originals by the leader and pianist Hazeltine, there's a new wardrobe for works by Cedar Walton, Sergio Mendes, Wayne Shorter, Duke Pearson, Horace Silver and Fred Lacey.

From Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, one cut from the Exactly Right album will be featured each morning on the New Day, New Play spotlight on my Daybreak show.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
