The 92NY, more familiarly known as the 92nd Street Y, has announced the lineup for its long-running jazz series, Jazz in July, founded by Dick Hyman in 1985, and curated by Bill Charlap since 2005. Charlap has announced that this is his final year as artistic director. “My nearly two decades guiding and shaping Jazz in July have been inexpressively wonderful,” said Charlap in a press release received by WBGO. “When I told my longtime friends at The 92nd Street Y at the start of 2023 that I had decided to move on after this season, it was emotional for me. I have loved running this festival, but it's time for me – time for new collaborations, for teaching and mentoring the next generation of talent, and for the many other aspects of my life in music. I’ll forever be grateful for my years leading Jazz in July, to 92NY for their trust in me, and to the profoundly gifted artists who have joined me in all of the magical musicmaking on that very special stage. I expect to return often, just wearing one hat now: Bill Charlap, piano player.”

The lineup for this year’s series features five special concerts during July 18-27, and includes Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nicholas Payton, John Scofield, Aaron Diehl, John Pizzarelli, Renee Rosnes, Ken Peplowski, Nicole Glover, Jeremy Pelt and many others. The series is part of 92NY’s Midsummer MusicFest, which includes an event on July 13 headlined by tap and swing dancer Caleb Teicher and jazz vocalist Veronica Swift. And, on July 16, Vijay Iyer and his trio of Tyshawn Sorey and Linda May Han Oh joins the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for the New York premiere of Emergence, his suite for chamber orchestra and jazz trio.
