He was one of the master crafters of bebop. Beyond that, Dizzy Gillespie’s influence was legendary — an inspiration to countless players, and a magnet bringing new folks to jazz around the world.

To celebrate this legacy, Bill Charlap — Grammy-winning pianist, and artistic director of Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y — recruited the ideal person, Jon Faddis.

A world-class trumpeter, Faddis first met Dizzy at age 12, and was inspired to continue his development on the instrument. Jon went on to become one of the world’s outstanding trumpeters and educators, furthering the next generation of players and fans.

Bill and Jon recently came to Morning Jazz to chat and play some Dizzy. They also picked a few favorite Gillespie recordings to underscore the importance of the man, who will be celebrated on July 24 with a concert titled ‘Dizzy! Celebrating Dizzy Gillespie.’ Along with Faddis and Charlap, it will feature pianist Renee Rosnes, saxophonist Jimmy Greene, bassist Peter Washington, drummer Kenny Washington and percussionist Daniel Sadownick.

In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
