Playdate Show #8: Dave Holland, Harold Mabern, Roy Hargrove and more

This archival material comes from our Playdate series and was originally published March 25, 2014.

This is the final Playdate in our 8-part series, and we've managed to cover a lot of ground!

Want piano? We've got Harold Mabern in New York City and Frank Emilo Flynn in Havana, Cuba in this show. Also from Havana, we've got trumpeter Roy Hargrove playing street rhumba and trombonist Steve Turre on conch shells.

But first - Dave Holland kicks things off with an early incarnation of his now famous quintet, featuring soprano saxophonist Chris Potter at the 1998 Mount Hood Jazz Festival. We previously featured singer Kurt Elling from Mount Hood on Playdate Show #4.

Playdate #8 also features two tenor saxophone masters: Frank Wess in 1997 with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Branford Marsalis with his quartet in 1998, outdoors in Washington Square Park.

Show #8 has two tributes to jazz greats: Dee Dee Bridgewater sings Horace Silver's "Filthy MacNasty" and Larry Coryell honors Count Basie, live on the day he passed away, with the beautiful ballad "Body and Soul." We've featured Coryell's 1984 performance at the Village Vanguard this week as a web extra: hear the full audio and a bonus tune from this date here. Check back in and dig into all of the Playdate archives.

Web Extra for Show #8: Bonus audio from Larry Coryell from the Village Vanguard in 1984.
