he Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture presents direct from Santo Domingo the acclaimed Dominican pianist Josean Jacobo performing music from his newest album, Herencia Criolla, on Friday, April 29, 2022, 8:00 pm at the Repertory Theater of Hostos Community College. He is joined by his extraordinary musicians Daroll Méndez on bass and Otoniel Nicolás on drums, inviting audiences to submerge themselves in the traditional and popular Dominican rhythms of Merengue and Bachata in a contemporary jazz setting. The concert is both cultural and educational. Short video recordings made out in the field will be shown, presenting the ancestral and folkloric music traditions of three different communities in the Dominican Republic - Baní, San Juan de la Maguana and Villa Mella. In addition, a brief video recorded in the capital Santo Domingo will showcase popular Merengue and Bachata rhythms. After each video, Josean will transition into his live music, guiding listeners through the cultural inspiration behind each composition and arrangement, creating a bridge between Dominican cultural history and its influence on the present.
