One of Daptone Records’ earliest projects, the Budos Band formed out of a New York jam session put together by local heroes Antibalas, coalescing into an instrumental psychedelic soul band that channels Afro-funk through ’70s rock and late-’60s R&B. The Staten Island born-and-bred band’s latest LP is 2020’s Long in the Tooth. Brazilian guitarist Rogê moves between bossa nova, samba, and reggae with ease, and draws inspiration from the African jongo, samba, afoxé and maculelê. An enthusiastic collaborator, his latest is a 2020 album with Seu Jorge; his NA VEIA project with Arlindo Cruz earned them a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Samba Album.
