Ever since her arrival on the international jazz scene in 2009, Bria Skonberg has been asked are you a trumpet player who sings, or a singer who plays trumpet? As she told Lee Mergner recently, " I don't care, but after decades of trying to synthesize my voice and my trumpet and figuring out how to best do that, I separated them for the first time.
Brass, the mostly all instrumental album, shows off why George Wein called Bria "one of my favorite trumpet players today!"
With pianist & organist Luther Allison, bassist Eric Wheeler, drummer Darrian Douglas, and a spirited exchange with trumpeter Kellin Hanas on Frank Loesser's "Brotherhood Of Man", Bria shows an appealing knack for composing, and with her bandmates gives us a taste of Jelly Roll Morton, Arlen and Koehler, and some Argentine tango on "Choclo" by Angel Villoldo, which later became the hit "Kiss Of Fire" in the early 50's.
