Sunday, March 15, was a thrilling night for actor Michael B. Jordan, who was raised in Newark and is a 2005 Arts High School graduate. Jordan won his first Oscar, winning in the best lead actor category for his dual role as brothers Smoke and Stack in the 2025 vampire horror film Sinners.

During his humble acceptance speech at the 98th Academy Awards ceremony in LA televised by ABC, the 39-year old actor, who began acting at age 12, thanked all those who have supported him.

Following Jordan’s best leading actor win, Newark Schools Superintendent Roger León released a statement saying Michael B. Jordan has inspired countless kids from Newark to work hard. León also praised Michael’s mother Donna, and his teachers, including drama teacher Carl Gonzalez.
